Week One Summary:
Presidents/Inspiration
I wanted to do some research on playing tricks on your senses and confusing your mind, one website which was useful was - http://www.smashinglists.com/10-amazing-tricks-to-play-with-your-brain/ which showed ten ways to mess with each of your senses and more!
Two of the mind tricks which stood out to me were the spinning girl which confused out cognition and also the illusion which played with our depth perception.
With this image here straight away I though the body was spinning clock wise but as soon as I read the description on the website and how it was talking about how some people can switch their minds to make it anti-clock wise my brain automatically started seeing the body spin the other way. The description given on the website about why this happens is stated as below
"The image is not objectively “spinning” in one direction or the other. It is a two-dimensional image that is simply shifting back and forth. But our brains did not evolve to interpret two-dimensional representations of the world but the actual three-dimensional world. So our visual processing assumes we are looking at a 3-D image and is uses clues to interpret it as such. Or, without adequate clues it may just arbitrarily decide a best fit – spinning clockwise or counterclockwise. And once this fit is chosen, the illusion is complete – we see a 3-D spinning image"
With this image it plays with our depth perception, as you stare into the image it creates depth within the image causing us to think and the depth makes us perceive the circles are spinning and creating a moving image where the image is actually still and not making any changes but it is all in our minds.
It seems as though majority of mind games and sense confusing is through visual perception and not as much through smell or sight on the internet. This made me think that visual may be the direction I head in as it has the most information available on the net and may be a good way to perceive and take on this project.
In lecture One we went over the first project briefly and passed around some examples from the previous years. They were very well thought out and work well, i especially like the ear muff one as I thought that i wouldn't be able to hear anything when applied it created a noise which i didn't expect and you could create your own symphony from such a simple device. We also went over what we were doing in the next tutorial and future tutorials.
