S T R U C T U R E  &  N O I S E

Week One Summary:

Tutorial Two:

Today Ben and Krishna introduced us to loops and we presented our sketches and precedents to the tutors for them to see what we were thinking  of doing and how we are going to present these.

These are my precedents I am going to use for my DSDN142 project two,

I want to use circles as my initial shape for this project as I think it could create effective effects on my final board.

These are my skecthes on how I want my final board to look,

Next tutorial we are going through looping tutorials then start to commence making our own codes for our final presentations.

Week One Summary:

Tutorial One:

Today we were formally introduced to the new project by Ben and Krishna, we read over the outlineds again and then as a fun activity we were instructed to jump on the school o fdesign website and download the pattern maker function and create a pattern which is effective visually using our own code, we all came up with some pretty cool designs, mine came out like this,

for next tutorial we were instructed to bring drawings as well as precedents so we can get underway with our coding!

Week One Summary:

Tutorial Two

Today we jumped straight into the coding which was quite interesting and fun. Ben started off the tutorial by talking about how objects are not just one object but it is a form which is made up from many materials and forms. He specifically used a book and talked about how it isn't just a book but made up from many aspects of materials and forms. We then slowly moved on to talking about parameters as Ben asked us to draw shapes on our grid paper. After drawing numerous shapes we were instructed to choose one shape in particular, and then we discussed how we could split this shape from being one from to lines and then points of contact. We talked about co-ordinates and Ben showed us how we could then transfer these attributes to our own shapes and we wrote down all the points on our shape, as I chose quite a complex shape I ended up with 30 points. We then finaly transferred our commands on paper into Processing to create our shape on the computer.

I chose the shape two up from the bottom on the left with the coding I created on paper on the right, from this I created this on the computer through the processing software.

I was happy with my shape and it was a good tutorial as I have never used these softwares before and it was interesting and a good learning curve, I look forward to the next tutorial.

Week One Summary:

Lecture One:

In our first lecture for DSDN141 we were introduced to the tutors and corse co-ordinator. We were then introduce to the course and our first project. We talked out how in this first project we wouldn't look at the object itself but the physical properties of the material such as a CD for example we wouldn't just look at it as a CD but as plastic and the attributes it has towards its physical design and strengths. We were shown examples to help up pick materials our self and to start broadening our minds to what the project and class is really about.

Commencing straight after the lecture was,

Tutorial One:

In our first tutorial we were instructed to go out on to the street and find materials that we could experiment and once we reported back to class we all went down to the first year work shop to literally mash out items to see the attributes to our materials physical features and aesthetics/function. The material which I found was mesh metal which is basic but it was all i could find. For my material I experimented by ripping the mesh apart and layering the mesh to create density. I wanted to heat it up but i never got the chance as the work shop was full but its my goal to do so before wednesday for our next tutorial.

As we can see in this image I bunched the mesh together to create layers creating a spectrum of different densities across the materials. You can see how when it is only one layer you can see through the material but when it is bunched together it backs hard to see and we are almost unable to see through the material. I think the next step after this would be to smash the material until it is in a dust form and layer it together to see how the particles form together and whether its still in a mesh form.

In this image we can see were i ripped the single threads from the material to see what effect this would have on the material. As I removed each piece individually it slowly took the strength away from the material and eventually the stands of metal would just become brittle and snap off due to loosing its strength. When it is all together as a bunch the material is very strong but after experimenting I was able to show how the before the mesh is created the product used in isolation is very weak.

I feel that this material was a poor choice as it has not many properties to play with, for wednesdays tutorial we need to bring 6 variations to different materials and I feel for that  want to play with the materials glass, plastic and perspex and I feel I can do a lot more with those materials opposed to this mesh.

Week One Summary:

Tutorial Two

Today we all bought in 5 everyday objects which we thought expressed each sense well and talked about them as well as passing them around and explaining to everyone why we chose them and which one was our favorite.

My Objects were:

  1. T O U C H - For my touch sense i chose cotton wool as shown in the picture above, reason for choosing this object because the feeling of holding and squeezing cotton wool is just heavenly like as the wool is just so soft and feels as if its melting in your hands and the extremely softness of the object feels amazing, cotton wool is generally used to apply substances to the body such as creams or alcohol for cuts, it is used because of its physical soft feeling and effectively works well as it functions as it should feeling amazing. Visually it doesn't have any amazing features as it is just white and looks unappealing to some, but function over aesthetics this is very functional.
  2. S I G H T - For my sight object I used a keychain flash light which I found on my dresser, I found this to fit the sight sense effectively as when there is no sight this flash light provides it when you are in a pitch black situation, as most flash lights do I felt it gives you a sense of direction when you are alone with no light and no sense of direction. The light is small but powerful and would be extremely functional in the dark night.
  3. S M E L L - For smell i brought a oil scent which is a product you put above a candle burning and as it heats up the aromas from the fragrance slowly start to fill the air in the room due to physics and science, I chose this as I feel it provides a peaceful scent in the room which provides a sense of relaxation and just smells incredibly nice!
  4. T A S T E - For my taste sense I bought in a packet of chewing gum, I felt this is appropriate as its one of my favorite pass times and I'm sure everyone has been in that situation were boredom has take over and even though gum is a small 1cm by 1cm green substance it provides hours of fun when you are chewing it. Gum isn't only used for the solution to boredom but it also provides a perfect stimulation inside your mouth from the first bite until it is thrown out. Starting off crunchy it magically turns into a chewy form which lasts forever, the gum also provides a way to make your breath smell amazing! Gum has many functions and I felt it best fit my taste sense.
  5. H E A R I N G - My hearing object is not in my image but for my hearing sense I chose a dog whistle as I felt a whistle is one of those objects which makes a distinctive noise which everyone can recognize and digest. The holder of a whilst normally has a sense of power whether it be a police office, a referee or a coach when blown everyone generally knows to stop and respond accordingly.
My favorite object from thee was the gum as I felt it has the biggest place in my life as I generally consume it more than once a day it always know how to make me happy!

After we all expressed and presented our objects we got into groups and discussed a specific sense and created brainstorms around the sense. My group was given S I G H T.

As you can see we came out with lots of ideas! The ideas which stood out to me the best was the emotion attachment which we associate with different colors and it reminded me of a sense confusing game where there would be colors written but the word were in different colors to the words and trying to say them really fast messed with your mind and you could do it. I feel that sight is a strong sense it could well be the sense I use for this project.

Week One Summary:

First Tutorial

In our first tutorial for DSDN112 we were introduced to our tutors and to the first project for this paper. My tutor is Cornelia in stream B. We briefly spoke about the five senses and how we perceive each one and how they intertwine and work together. We also did some experiments to get us thinking about our own projects, we did a series of two experiments. The first was a device which a student in the previous year created where as you consume a un-identified substance you smell a scent attached to the cup holder which confuses your sense as you smell a sweet aroma but the liquid itself is actually sour as it was lemon juice with red food color to make it look like raspberry and the second experiment was with colored milk to which our perception was that it would be flavored milk but when consumed it was only plain milk with food color which also confused our senses. After the experiments we briefly talked about how our minds and sense trick and confuse us as it seems as one thing but turns out to be another.

For second tutorial we were instructed to bring 5 different objects to express each sense as well as research presidents and inspiration to help us with the project.
