My Final Clip:

Expressing "From Nothing to Something" showing my perception of industrial design of how you go from a problem to a solution through a series of process to provide a function form to help with every day obstacles.

Stand Point and Justification:

My major is industrial design and to express my perception on how I view this major I wanted to mainly show how industrial design is providing that solution to a problem and how theoretically you literally go from "nothing to something". As stated in the brief it says to relate this clip to our minor or something were passionate about that is major in out lives and as my electives are solely design based being photographic I felt as if i could use this opportunity to express my passion for cars as it is one of my hobbies and a major thing in my life. So to tie it all together I came up with the idea of needing a jack because the tire on the vehicle was deflated. I think I have effectively been able to combine the two together to create an effect composition and if I play my cars right it shall come out very effectively to show "a new way of seeing"

I have tried to link the story boards and the stop motion itself by using the same vehicle to provide a better throughout and planned narration and to really express that sense of passion which for fills the briefs requirements.

I was initially inspired by Gustavo Brenck's "Gig Pack" which consist of both form and function and creates a different function for a everyday object being a bag which can transform into a scooter, this inspired me with my clip to show how anyone can come up with an initial idea for a problem they encounter and then proceed to actually create that form that is functional.

I think through my clip I have effectively portrayed my perception on Industrial Design.

Development:

- "A new way of seeing"

I felt that the phrase " A new way of seeing" is quite important to tie the whole clip together with my perception of Industrial Design, so i felt that I needed to change how i was going to show it in the clip from what I had drawn in my story boards.

As we can see in the first two images i changed the format of the frame where the character express' "From nothing to something" felt that having the car will take the focal point away from the message which is very important so I changed it to my actor expressing it in a speech bubble.

For the last sector of my clip I felt that the story boarded version of the quote was not strong enough so I felt that if I used lego to spell to the words it would be effective and also help emphasize the motif and my view point. Effectively executed so it looks nice and I feel it has turned out better than it would have if i used the story boarded ideas.

Development :

- Time period

Initially I had all the 900 photos taken all in the same time period so throughout the clip the clip retained a sunny weather forecast across the whole clip. After some thought i decided that i would take the photos at different times in the day so you could see how he is working through the day to go through the design process to create the form which will provide the function for him, i thinking this comes out effectively through the clip and shows that sense of time and shows I thought about it a little more in depth rather than just snapping images to create a nice looking sequence.

As we can see in the images the first images is taking in the morning and the second image is take later at night, this is used to create a more realistic series and clip.

Development:

- Using the motif

Through out my clip I wanted to express a motif which initially became an idea when i thought about using lego as the jack, I needed a way to tie the whole clip together with a cartoony/unrealistic motif which would run through the clip. As progressed i wanted to insert cartoon like images which had meaning but also tied that motif together as shown in the images below.

As we can see the cartoon images effectively portray the motif through the images. I purposely pause for a long period on the "OMG, flat tire :(" image to emphasize the situation and so it shows more clearly when someone else who dosnt know whats going on perceives the clip.

Clip Story Board:

I wanted to base my storyboard around a comic book form to further explore my motif which was addressed throughout my entire clip as it touches upon that feel of unrealistic matter especially with the "lego jack" which my story is entirely based upon to express my idea about design innovation. I feel that the story boards are self explanatory towards the bases of the clip but i have written little statements next to each images to make the idea more clear for the person who will perceive the story board.

1.) Basic title outline my major, does what it should giving the story a title
2.) First look into the story itself, as you can see the actor has come to his car ready for work to see he has a flat tyre, as stated in the caption in the image.

3.) After seeing the flat tire the unfortunate person in character has an idea and runs back into his house.

4.) The character then goes to his work desk and starts to research and generate ideas to carry out his
process
5.) The character starts to draw concepts of what could help him to lift his car to change tires, the charter distinctly uses the design process labeling each step including "concepts, development, final product and presentation".
6.) The character goes through development and this is shown through many sketches and photos showing time lapse.
7.) Just to emphasize the design process here we see the charter just going over the steps again.
8.) A final of the car jack is drawn up and finalized in the last steps of the process.
9.) The jack is then constructed out of lego which moving parts which will be used to jack the car up.
10.) Character runs out of the house in excitement to jack his car so he can embark on his endeavors for the day.
11.) At this stage the car is jacked up and tire is changed all with the lego jack that was created by the character.

12.) In this board we have a scene where once the wheel is on the character is in the car and now traveling to his destination. At this
point I utilize the opportunity to state the
intention of my clip and state the main
focus i had about industrial design,
being "From nothing to something" really
providing that solution from the problem itself

13.) To tie everything together in this scene we have the car driving off and on the window i will photo shop the phrase "A new way of seeing" to completely tie it all together and finish of the composition.

I feel from this story board I will be able to produce an effective clip between 30-40 seconds outlining what i see as the strongest factor about my major being Industrial Design.

Old Bank of New Zealand

The beautiful building which stands strong on the corner of Manners and Cuba Street was not always a structure to sell fast food burgers to fast passed workers but it was once a Bank of New Zealand. With numerous banks consisting over wellington designed by William Turnbell he included his son in his practice to produce the 5th bank in Wellington, “ Willian designed on his own the 1913 BNZ Te Aro on the corner of Manners and Cuba” (McGil, (1997,p129) which now we all know by Burger King on Manners. With a heart constructed with of steel and concrete the exterior is exuberantly decorated with detailing, for example “large tympani, repetitive pediments, buttress-like pilasters and broken entablatures” (Norberg-Schulz, (1972p184-185), which expresses the baroque form that the building displays. Pillars outlining the entrance way stand strong indicating the path way for users of the building shown in image two with lion heads decoration the wall sides with more decretive shapes linking to the overall baroque style, “ The Bank of New Zealand Te Aro branch in the center of town has had the decorative impact of its elaborate pillars and pediments and fine plaster curls” (McGill, (1997, p129). The bank was formerly used as a place to store and retrieve money for the citizens of wellington. I believe that the baroque style was used by Turnball as is expressed power and class above others in the period the building was made, “Baroque style symbolized commercial power” (Norberg-Schulz, (1972p184-185). After being a student at Victoria Design School I can see behind the Burger King façade that the building has been covered in and appreciate the architecture for what it really is.
